BYU–Hawaii has recently adopted a new class registration tool called Schedule Planner that allows students to more effectively plan out their semester and sign up for classes, making the registration process more efficient and user friendly.
Using Schedule Planner, students may input which classes they need and block off times for work or other responsibilities. The Schedule Planner then takes this information, cross-references it with class sections that are available, and produces sample schedules for the students to choose from. Students may then select the customized schedule that works best for their needs and can use Schedule Planner to register students for those classes.
When students registered in the past, they often had to explore different options for the semester, check the classes available online, create tentative schedules, and then register, all in different steps using different tools, a time-consuming and often disorganized process. “This is something people might be sketching out on paper,” states Jennifer Lane, associate academic vice president for curriculum, “but the Schedule Planner gives the information students need all in one place and allows them to try out different combinations with different breaks to see what they look like.”
Carston Feigleson, a senior studying Supply Chain in Operations Management, recently used Schedule Planner and shared it with his classmates. “Quite a few students in my Supply Chain class expressed frustrations about registration, so I raised my hand and told them about Schedule Planner,” said Feigleson. “They were excited about it because it creates all your possible schedules and gives you a visual representation of what each looks like. I really like that you can plan your classes around your own needs, so if you have to reserve a particular time of the day for a break or work, the Schedule Planner can help you come up with that schedule.”
