BYU–Hawaii Food Services Creates Award Winning Meals

BYU–Hawaii Food Services won the Loyal E. Horton Gold Award for the fourth time, outperforming some of the top educational institutions in the nation. BYU–Hawaii took home the award in the category Residential Dining- Special Event. Food Services has been participating in this prestigious competition since 2001 and have won bronze, silver and gold awards throughout the years.

The National Association of College and University Food Services (NACUFS) recognize top university programs in a variety of categories each year. In college and university culinary arts, one of the most noteworthy professional accomplishments is being a recipient of a NACUFS Loyal E. Horton Dining Award. According to the NACUFS website, “Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards celebrate exemplary menus, presentations, special event planning, and new dining concepts, and provide an avenue for sharing ideas and creative presentations in campus dining services.”

Food Services special event entered this year was the “Matariki Festival of Aotearoa,” highlighting the unique Maori culture in food, music, and dance. “The foodservices staff spearheaded the event with the help of our very own BYU–Hawaii Kiwi Chapter. Foodservices is very grateful to have had the support of the Kiwi Chapter and their advisor, without them we would not have been able to put up a fun and successful event,” says Marilou Lee, BYU–Hawaii’s Club Dining and vending manager.

The focus of Food Services special events is to help students understand and appreciate the different cultures represented here on campus. “This is a great opportunity for any clubs and chapters who would like their culture to be showcased. We encourage them to see us and hopefully we will get a chance to work with them to highlight their culture,” says Lee.
