BYU's Vocal Point Brings Show to Laie

For the first time ever, BYU’s Vocal Point will be performing at BYU–Hawaii on Saturday, October 20, 2012, in an event sponsored by BYU–Hawaii Performance Series.
The nine-man a cappella singing group Vocal Point has been performing for more than 20 years. It was dreamed up by a pair of students, and after three years of being student run was adopted by the music department and became an official singing group. From their first year they have had a good following and a large fan base, but the popularity in recent years has increased due in part to new media, especially their videos on YouTube, but also because of the group's appearance on the NBC show “The Sing-Off.”
“We are absolutely thrilled to be coming to BYU–Hawaii. And since it is a sister school of our BYU, it will be like a home away from home,” said director McKay Crockett. This is not only the first time that they will be performing in Laie, but the first time they will have performed outside of the U.S. mainland.
The group is known for their arrangements of pop and classic songs, and their stirring renditions of LDS hymns. Their mission statement says that they look “To enlighten the hearts and minds of all people who are within the sound of our voice unto the filling of their souls with joy.” Crockett expanded, “What we try to do is provide good, positive, uplifting music. The world needs uplifting music to counter the many other types of messages that are heard, and we take that very seriously.”
When asked about what might be seen in the performance this Saturday, Crockett chuckled and said, “Our repertoire is so varied, and we have such a wide range of music that I would just say what one of the attendees of our performances said: ‘your music appeals to me, my grandkids and my grandparents.’”
Jacquie Alisa, coordinator of Performance Series, said, “We had an enormous amount of student demand to get them here, and now, the interest is building both on-campus and off-campus.”
