New Bike Lane Opens, Improves Campus

A counter-flow bike lane now runs on the inner perimeter of the big circle, making it easier for those on bikes, skateboards and non-motorized scooters to get to places on campus. With the addition of the new bike lane, cyclists and skateboarders can now travel clockwise, or opposite to the regular one-way traffic lane, around the big circle.

Cyclists needing to get to class or work may choose which direction to take as they navigate campus on the roadway. The bike lane, indicated by the new white road markings, is designed exclusively for cyclists and skateboarders – motorized vehicles, including mopeds, are not allowed in the new lane and should continue to follow the regular one-way traffic flow around the circle. Cyclists and skateboarders, however, may now take the easiest route to their destination, either clockwise using the bike lane or, counterclockwise, using the roadway.

The one-way traffic pattern that currently exists will remain unchanged to all vehicles, carts, bicycles, skateboards, roller blades, scooters, and other non-motorized vehicles traveling in the counterclockwise direction.

Because of the new counter-flow lane, all drivers and pedestrians must exercise a heightened awareness of bikers and skateboarders that will be coming clockwise around the circle. Green sections along the lane indicate where vehicles may be entering the circle to remind both drivers and riders to use more caution in these intersections. Pedestrians should always exercise caution when crossing the road, looking both left and right to check that the way is clear.

It will remain enforced that there is to be no cycling or skating on any of the sidewalks on the BYU-Hawaii campus to maintain pedestrian safety.

As a reminder, the speed limit on campus is 15 MPH to ensure safety with others on the road.

While the campus community gets accustomed to this new traffic flow, security will have increased patrols to help educate on the proper use of the traffic lanes. Anyone found to be violating traffic rules, pertaining to traffic flow and bike lane usage, may be subject to a $20 fine.

Please visit or call Campus Security (5-3503) with any questions. Safe travels!
