Pacific Banking Scholars Program

Drawing similarities from each institution’s purpose to “learn, lead, and build,” Bank of Hawaii and BYU–Hawaii have recently partnered to create the Pacific Banking Scholars Program. The program will supply qualified students from American Samoa, Saipan, and Guam with scholarships, internships, and career opportunities. A reception was held on February 16, at which Bank of Hawaii presented BYU–Hawaii with $100,000 for the program.

The Pacific Banking Scholars Program provides assistance to students from low- or moderate-income households in American Samoa, Saipan, and Guam seeking to further their education in finance, accounting or business. Students in this program must show a commitment to return to their respective community after graduation from BYU–Hawaii.

Peter Ho, Bank of Hawaii chairman and CEO, said, “Bank of Hawaii is pleased to provide Pacific Island students with this opportunity to gain business and financial skills. We designed this program to provide not only financial support through scholarships, but to also offer students career opportunities through Bank of Hawaii internship and associate programs.”

President Steven C. Wheelwright said, “We’re thrilled with this new program and are grateful to Bank of Hawaii for their generous support of our students. Connecting students with internships and jobs in their home countries is a point of emphasis for BYU–Hawaii, and the Pacific Banking Scholars Program aligns perfectly with that effort.” (Left: students from the BYU-Hawaii Tongan Association perform at the reception)

Pacific Banking Scholars can also apply for a summer internship in the Bank of Hawaii commercial banking division or Hawaii branch division. In addition, Bank of Hawaii may offer select full-time positions in its commercial banking division or Hawaii branch division to qualified graduates of the program as part of its Bank Associate Program.

Recruitment for the Pacific Banking Scholars Program is ongoing. Students interested in applying for the program can contact BYU–Hawaii Career Services (career.byuh.edu, 808.675.3533) for more information.
