BYU–Hawaii will be celebrating Spirit Week this week, February 6-11, with a variety of events and activities that have been specifically prepared to commemorate the anniversary of the university’s founding, and its legacy and mission.
On February 12, 1955, President David O. McKay broke ground for Church College of Hawaii – later named Brigham Young University–Hawaii. His remarks during the groundbreaking highlight the essence of Spirit Week 2012: “We dedicate our actions in this service unto thee and unto thy glory and to the salvation of the children of men, that this college, and the temple, and the town of Laie may become a missionary factor, influencing not thousands, not tens of thousands, but millions of people who will come seeking to know what this town and its significance are.”
Spirit Week 2012 has been uniquely tailored to help spread a spirit of togetherness found at BYU-Hawaii’s beautiful campus and by extension, alumni and friends of the university who are now learners, leaders and builders across the globe. This week will be an exciting opportunity, not only to unify existing members of the University, but also those individuals who have been influenced by the spirit of BYU–Hawaii.
While Spirit Week is not a new concept, it will be merging with the traditional homecoming week that has been previously celebrated at the Laie campus. The activities and events will take place all week, culminating with a tailgate and special halftime presentation at Friday’s basketball game (February 10).
