David O. McKay Lecturer to Speak on "Truth, The Sum of Existence"

The 2014 David O. McKay Lecture will take place on Thursday, February 13, 2014, at 11:00 AM in the Cannon Activities Center. When first created in 1962, the Lecture Series was designed to afford distinguished members of the faculty the opportunity to present insights from their fields of study and their reflections on the gospel. Today, it continues to achieve this outcome. Lecturers are nominated by fellow faculty members and approved by the Board of Trustees. The title of David O. McKay Lecturer remains one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon faculty members at BYU–Hawaii.

Susan Dale Barton, professor of mathematics, is the honoree this year. Dr. Barton has a love of learning, teaching, and students. She is originally from Utah. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Utah State University and went on to earn her doctorate at Oregon State University. When interviewing for a faculty position at BYU–Hawaii in 1990, she was asked why she had two ‘B’s on her transcript. She quickly replied, “That is just to show I am human.” She has been teaching at BYU–Hawaii for 24 years, and during that time, Dr. Barton has chaired several committees, served on numerous boards, and has been chosen to serve on many task forces. Her leadership has been utilized in professional organizations, and her research has been presented internationally.

Dr. Barton will be sharing her lecture entitled "Truth, The Sum of Existence.”

“For the past year, I have been researching how one can identify truth when faced with conflicting ideas,” she said. “We will consider a few examples in my presentation. I promise there will be no mathematics equations (scary or otherwise) in the lecture.”

In addition to the 11 AM Lecture in the Cannon Activities Center, all are invited to join Dr. Barton in a panel discussion following the lecture at 3:30 PM in the Aloha Center (room 155/65). For more information, visit http://davidomckay.byuh.edu/.
