Coach Porter Reaches 1,000-Win Mark in Tennis

Brigham Young University Hawaii Tennis Coach David Porter joined a very elite group of coaches today as his women's tennis team defeated Dixie State 9-0 to give Porter his 1,000th career win as a head coach.

Porter, now in his 16th year leading the BYUH women's program, won his 452nd match with them to go with the 548 victories he has notched in just over 23 years with the men's program to reach the milestone.

Porter reached the 1,000-win plateau in the remarkably small number of just 1,128 matches, making his overall record 1,000-128. During this time he has also coached 29 individual women to 62 All-American honors, and 50 men to 97 All-American designations.

His record with the BYUH women's program now stands at 452-13. He has won nine national championships with the women's team and two with the men's team for eleven titles overall. Today's win was also the 68th in a row for the women's team. Coach Porter's women's teams have previously recorded winning streaks of 103 and 130 consecutive matches.

The BYUH men's team, under Coach Porter, has an overall record of 548-115.

Coach Porter said he was happy to have reached the milestone but was quick to give credit to his players. "It means you've been around a long time," he said, "but it also means that you have had outstanding players who understood the value of coming to this great school and getting a wonderful education while also playing some great tennis. Each one of the many players who have played here owns a part of this achievement."
