Seasider Basketball on a Roll

Both the BYU–Hawaii men’s and women’s basketball teams are having a storybook season, setting career records, winning pivotal conference games, and enjoying top national and regional rankings. Last month, the teams took a road trip to California and swept their opponents, both teams winning all of their games against Holy Names, Dominican (Cali.), Fresno Pacific, and Academy of Art.

The Lady Seasiders are currently 12-8 overall and 9-5 in the PacWest Conference, making them currently tied for third in the PacWest Conference. The team is enjoying one of their best seasons in school history, spurred by a seven-game win streak, including their four California road games. That streak recently ended with losses against Cal. Baptist, Azusa Pacific, and Chaminade, but the team remains optimistic about the rest of the season. “These were very tough opponents,” says Head Coach Craig Stanger. “They showed us what we need to continue to work on in order to be a top team.”

The men’s team is currently on an eight-game win streak, having just defeated Chaminade (Honolulu, HI), bringing them up to 18-2 overall and 12-2 in PacWest Conference play. Last week, in games against Azusa Pacific and Cal Baptist, the Seasiders became the first team to defeat Azusa Pacific in regulation this season and scored 100 points against Cal Baptist for the first time in the series history. Those wins helped the team move up one spot in the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division II Rankings to No. 16 and seven spots in the Division II Media Poll, sponsored by D2 Sports Information Directors’ Association, to No. 11. The Seasiders also broke into the top 20 of the Bennett Rankings at No. 16, up 15 spots from last week.

Next week on February 12, both teams will play a rematch at Azusa Pacific to defend their place in the conference standings.
