Career Fair Highlights Next Steps, MentorConnect

The Brigham Young University–Hawaii Alumni & Career Services department organizes semi-annual Career Fairs in Winter and Fall semesters, in coordination with the Hawaii Career Week, which involves five other Hawaii university campuses, including University of Hawaii–Manoa. Winter 2015 semester’s Career Fair was held on March 6, in the Aloha Center Ballroom.

The main purpose of the Career Fair is to provide students of all majors with opportunities to learn about, connect with, and apply to career opportunities in the professional world. BYU–Hawaii welcomes local, national, and international companies, organizations, and graduate schools to its Career Fair. Career paths students can explore at the Career Fair range from companies such as Starwood Hotels and Resorts to organizations like the U.S. Government’s National Security Agency. The Career Services department on campus encourages students to actively participate in future career fairs, as there are always new organizations to come recruit, both domestically and internationally, from BYU–Hawaii. Gerting to knpw recruiters at the event and networking with companies on this individual level helps students discover new possibilities for their future and increase their chances of getting hired.

In addition to the Career Fair, students have access to the other resources offered at the university's Alumni & Career Services office. The department actively helps students with résumés, applications, graduate school searches, advice on postgraduation life and work, information sessions, international CareerConnect networking trips, and mentoring.

BYU–Hawaii's mentoring program, MentorConnect, was one of the booths featured at this semester’s Career Fair and a critical benefit to BYU-Hawaii students, alumni, and friends of the university. MentorConnect aims to connect students with professionals in companies of interest on an online platform, helping to increase career awareness and opportunities for networking. MentorConnect is an excellent way to prepare for a career as students can receive individual feedback on their resumes and can participate in the mock interview features. This allows students to learn so much more before they leave to enter the workforce.
