Eight members of the BYU-Hawaii Concert Choir, recently returned from a 21-day tour of China and Mongolia, were featured on the program of the last BYU-Hawaii Women’s Organization luncheon for the 2006-2007 year.
All spoke of the love they felt within the choir. Hannah Speidel, a senior from Colorado majoring in Music and Hospitality and Tourism, thought of the choir as a “Zionistic people”, a real change from how she said she saw the choir at the beginning of fall semester.

Addressing the BYU-Hawaii faculty, staff, and students for the last time as president of of the university, President Eric B. Shumway encouraged them to be unified, open to change, and to press forward in faith.
He used the recent Concert Choir tour to China and Mongolia as a metaphor to make four points encouraging the university ohana to take the anticipated changes a new president will bring in stride.
“The preparation of the choir allowed them to perform with radiance,” said Shumway, referring to the apostolic blessing given by Elder Richard G. Scott in November 2007. “That bless has been dramatically fulfilled.”
He compared the choir’s journey to the mission of BYU-Hawaii in four ways.

ULAANBAATAR, Mongolia — Just when I think the concert choir can't get any better, they do. On Sunday, May 20, the choir performed for 25 minutes following the Young Ambassadors from BYU Provo in a musical social for the BYU/BYUH/Polynesian Cultural Center alumni, which was the first time the sister schools have shared the same stage at the same time.

ULAANBAATAR, Mongolia — At the first performance of the BYU-Hawaii Concert Choir's Harmony with Aloha tour to China and Mongolia, one song in particular reached out and grabbed me: Ubi Caritas. Defying logic and reason, this song tugged firmly at my heartstrings and, in a flash of uncommon sense, had me fully convinced it was written just for me. That, my friends, is the magic of music.
You can imagine my surprise when I learned the song was composed by one of our own Concert Choir members, Timothy Max "Cooper" Johnson, a music major from Delta, Utah.
Johnson composed the song for his music composition class, under the direction of Daniel Bradshaw, BYUH's newest music faculty member, who recently received his Ph.D. in composition from Indiana University.

As BYU-Hawaii music professor Michael Belnap finished directing the 62-voice group in the final strains of Aloha 'Oe in the Ulaanbaatar State Drama Theatre, he and some choir members had tears in their eyes: They were perhaps conscious that the songs they would present the following evening at a Latter-day Saint musical fireside in this city of over one million people would be the last time many of them would ever sing together again.

Because a shipment of tee shirts identifying the effort as a service project of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints didn't arrive in time, most of the volunteers tied identifying yellow tags to their arms. Many of them also wore facemasks as protection from the dust and the cold.

Shumway an honorary professor today in partial recognition for BYU-Hawaii's instructional design assistance in producing distance-learning materials that have been used by over 2,600 medical students and practitioners last year, as well as other educational initiatives.
"It's my privilege and honor to give my old comrade this meaningful ceremony," said HSUM President Ts. Lkhagvasuren. He added that the cooperation has led his students to "becoming better doctors and achieving better health."
