Announced in 2012 and officially opened in 2013, BYU–Hawaii’s Center for Learning and Teaching is an on-campus and online resource dedicated to the improvement and advancement of learning. The Center is part of the strategic imperatives that have been developing over the last several years to continue to improve the quality of education on campus.

The theme of this year’s symposium is “Fostering Deep Learning.” Ken Bain, an internationally recognized professor and bestselling author is coming to BYU–Hawaii as the main speaker for the symposium. Bain’s bestselling book, What the Best College Teachers Do, won the 2004 Virginia and Warren Stone Prize and has been one of the top selling books on higher education.

Presentations include guest speakers from BYU–Hawaii and other universities. Speakers come from BYU–Hawaii, Leeward Community College, Hawai’i Community College, Honolulu Community College, Kapi’olani Community College, Kaua’i Community College, University of Hawai’i Maui College, and Windward Community College.

A special session on Saturday morning will emphasize teaching in a gospel setting and is being offered for BYU–Hawaii faculty, LDS Church members and their friends, and anyone interested in improving teaching in a Christ-centered setting. Dr. Robert E. Quinn, from the University of Michigan and author of Discovering the Leader Within and The Best Teacher in You, will be the featured presenter at this special session on Saturday, February 21.

Although faculty are the main focus of the Learning and Teaching symposium, students are also encouraged to attend. “We would love students to come on Saturday,” says Kevin Kimball, director for the Center of Learning and Teaching. Students that are interested can contact Kimball at kevin.kimball@byuh.edu.
