Student Chapter’s Gold Award of Excellence and Upcoming Events

In October of 2013, BYU–Hawaii’s chapter of BYU Management Society was the only student chapter to win the Dean’s Gold Award of Excellence at the Management Society’s annual Global Leadership Conference, where BYU–Hawaii students, faculty, and staff were well-represented as participants and speakers. The Dean’s Gold Award of Excellence is awarded to chapters who meet requirements of leadership, activity, and service.

With a mission to create moral and ethical leaders, the BYU Management Society has 92 chapters around the world. BYU–Hawaii’s own chapter has expanded to over 400 members, many of whom have graduated and joined other chapters where they now work side by side with business leaders in their home countries and hold leadership positions on executive boards.

“I see the BYU Management Society as a vibrant network of highly ethical professionals around the globe,” says Jodi Chowen, director of BYU–Hawaii Alumni and Career Services. “Regardless of what industry or occupation a student may be pursuing, they will learn how to network. They will rub shoulders with some of the best professionals in the field. They will learn principles of success. Best of all, they can contribute their own strength to the network and encourage others in maintaining high moral standards. The BYU Management Society is a great place to find ethical leaders, for which our world is so hungry.”

For those in the BYU–Hawaii’s chapter, there are monthly activities for students to participate in on campus. Recently, over 160 students attended a Personal Finance presentation given by professor and CPA David Waite on January 30, 2014. “As college students, it is very important for us to know where our expenses are,” said  Kenneth Lam, a Business Management Marketing and Supply Chain major  from Alberta, Canada. “Professor Waite’s presentation opened my eyes. I learned I need to track my expenses to better manage my budge. I am planning to join Management Society here and network with the chapter in Canada.”

The student chapter has great activities planned for the next few months. Dean Lee Tom Perry, dean of BYU Marriott School, will be the speaker in the first “Dean’s Seminar” on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 11 AM in HGB 275, an event co-sponsored with the Willes Center. Perry is an expert in strategy and author of several articles and books.

Kyle Cashen, BYU–Hawaii student chapter president, and others chapter members will present successful networking ideas and experiences during Career Week on Wednesday, March 5, 2014.

Sheri Dew, CEO of Deseret Book, will be the recipient of the Global Leadership Award in the Fourth Annual Gala Dinner at 7 PM on March 18, 2014 in Aloha Center Ballroom. The event gives an opportunity for students to network with business, university, and community representatives in a social setting.

More information about these events can be found on the BYU Management Society website http://byums.org/.  BYU Management Society has two chapters in Hawaii (Honolulu and BYU–Hawaii), and chapters around the world are open to all who want to build moral and ethical leadership.
