Celebrating 50 years at the Polynesian Cultural Center

As many who are associated with BYU–Hawaii already know, this year marks the 50th anniversary of the Polynesian Cultural Center located next to the university’s Laie, Hawaii campus. Originally dedicated on October 12, 1963, the Center helps about 600-700 students fund their education every semester, and it has always been a place where students can learn life skills. “The Polynesian Cultural Center has contributed to my understanding of the spirit of Aloha,” said Thanathon Phosricha, an alumnus from Thailand who worked there as a tour guide. “This motivates me to improve the world around me and to be a better example everywhere.”

Over the years, the Center has grown to accommodate millions of visitors. Recent enhancements and renovations have been made as part of a five-year plan with a goal to give the Center a “face-lift” in time for the 50th Anniversary celebration. Areas to see such improvements include the Hawaiian Village and the IMAX Theater, both of which were modernized and beautified. There has also been an addition to meal options with the introduction of the Islands Buffet which can be found in the Samoan Village where visitors can participate in a Samoan-style buffet.

The Center will be hosting a variety of events from September 1-8. Many past employees will be attending the celebration and will also be part of a special Night Show on Friday, September 6.  Two special editions of the show will be shown: the first highlighting alumni from the first 25 years of the Center and the second showcasing Night Show participants from the past 25 years.
