Zhang Named PACWest Female Athlete of the Year

BYU-Hawaii women’s tennis player Nannan (Dallas) Zhang was selected by the PacWest sports information directors as the 2015-16 PacWest Female Athlete of the Year on Thursday.

This is the third consecutive year a player from BYU-Hawaii has won the award after Shi Ting (Stella) Chen won the past two years. Zhang ended the year as the No. 1 singles player as ranked by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and was also No. 1 in doubles with Xin (Summer) Wen.

This past season Zhang led the top ranked Seasiders to their 10th consecutive PacWest title and the NCAA Division II national title match against Armstrong State. She earned her third-consecutive PacWest Women’s Tennis Player of the Year and PacWest Championship Most Outstanding Player award. She was named an ITA All-American in singles and doubles.

Zhang is currently on a 35 match unbeaten streak dating back to March 2015 in singles and was also undefeated in doubles last season. Zhang will represent NCAA Division II at the 2016 Oracle/ITA Arthur Ashe/All-Star Weekend.

Thibaud Berland was named Male Athlete of the Year. Berland was the PacWest Men’s Tennis Player of the Year, and first-team All-PacWest in singles and doubles. An ITA All-American in singles and doubles, he ascended to the No. 1 spot in the nation in both on March 24, and was named an ITA All-Star. He led HPU to its fourth PacWest Championship title and first NCAA National Championship. He was also named the PacWest Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Wednesday.
