Student Winner of Statewide Entrepreneur Competition

Kalin Uluave, Brigham Young University—Hawaii student majoring in business management, was selected by Entrepreneurs’ Organization Hawaii as the winner of the 2017 Global Student Entrepreneur Awards statewide qualifier.

Uluave won for his North Shore retail business Tahitian Treasures, which he opened in September 2015 at the Polynesian Cultural Center.

Kalin Uluave entered the student entrepreneur competition held Thursday at the Honolulu Design Center along with fellow BYU-Hawaii student Elvin Laceda, who both “received some great feedback from the judges and organizers of the Entrepreneurs Organization (EO Hawaii)”, according to BYUH faculty member Jason Earl.

Earl credits how “the EO Hawaii group was very generous this year and Kalin's package includes a new suit, surface pro, trip for 2 to Kansas City and free consulting for his business and presentation skills.”

Uluave admits that his wife Kiana is the one who keeps him going when it comes to the business.

Qualifications for the second annual competition included a written application and half-hour presentation to a panel of Hawaii business leaders.

Uluave will represent his business Tahitian Treasures and the state of Hawaii during the U.S. national competition in Kansas City, Mo., in March. The winner of the national competition will attend the GSEA Finals in Frankfurt, Germany, to compete with the world’s top student entrepreneurs and have a chance to win cash and other business services.

Hawaii National bank was the official sponsor of the event.
