Presiding Bishop to Speak at Brigham Young University–Hawaii Graduation Ceremony

Laie, Hawaii - Bishop Gary E. Stevenson, presiding bishop of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will address Brigham Young University–Hawaii’s 359 graduates and their families at this Winter’s commencement ceremony held on Saturday, April 18, 2015, at 9:30 AM in the Cannon Activities Center.

The university will award 70 associate’s degrees and 317 bachelor’s degrees. Graduates range from 19 to 48 years old.

As a young man, Bishop Stevenson served a mission in Japan and later was called to be mission president of the Japan Nagoya Mission from 2004-2007. He was then called to the First Quorum of the Seventy in 2008 and served as a counselor and president in the Asia North Area. He has served in a variety of other Church callings, including counselor in a stake presidency and bishop.  

Bishop Stevenson received a degree in business administration and later cofounded and served as president of an exercise equipment manufacturing company. He and his wife, Lesa Jean Higley, have four sons.

Accompanying Bishop Stevenson at BYU–Hawaii’s Winter commencement will be Mark B. Woodruff of the Church Educational System. Brother Woodruff serves as the assistant to the commissioner of the Church Educational System and as secretary to the Boards of Trustees.
