Staying Active, Building Relationships with Intramurals

Brigham Young University–Hawaii’s intramural program has had a long tradition of offering an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to participate in a variety of sports and other recreational activities. The Intramurals department has always set goals to provide an enjoyable, comprehensive, and wholesome program of activities to foster the development of personal physical fitness and promote interests and participation in recreational sports of skills and abilities. This semester, they have introduced changes that they hope will make intramurals easier to participate in and more fun all around.

Under the new program format, teams will now be created within the student wards. This change is intended to build ward spirit and create an opportunity for members to get to know each other. Each ward on campus and the Sunset Branch now has a ward intramural representative who is in charge of assigning team captains and signing students up. Students may sign up for as many teams as they would like.

Students registered in the current semester and regular full-time faculty/staff are allowed to participate in any individual and team activity. Non-student spouses can participate in any individual event and only in co-ed team events in which his/her spouse is participating. Part-time coaches and assistants who have completed athletic ecclesiastical requirements can also participate.

Current intramural sports include men’s and women’s basketball, coed volleyball, tennis, coed spike-ball, coed ultimate Frisbee, badminton, and 6x6 soccer. The program is also featuring a new event this semester: coed Frisbee golf.
